Rebels Head To West Texas For Three Matches

2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Two

FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels stay on the road for the second consecutive week with a three-match swing through west Texas. UNLV will participate in the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock this Friday (Sept. 2) and Saturday (Sept. 3). The Rebels will play Central Arkansas (10:00 am CT/8:00 am PT) and Morehead State (4:00 pm CT/2:00 pm PT) on Friday before closing out the tournament with a contest against Northwestern State (12:00 pm CT/10:00 am PT) Saturday.

ON THE SIDELINES: After spending two straight weeks on the road to open up the 2011 season, the UNLV Rebels return to Las Vegas to open up their home schedule and host the UNLV Invitational. Joining the Rebels in Las Vegas are Southern Utah, Eastern Washington and Cal State Northridge. The two-day event will take place Sept. 9-10.

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels went 0-3 last weekend at Northern Colorado's Hampton Inn & Suites Classic in Greeley, Colo. UNLV kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 3-1 hard-fought loss to Colorado on Friday morning. Later that night, they suffered a 3-0 defeat to the host Northern Colorado. On Saturday, they closed out the tournament with a 3-0 loss to UC Davis.

The Rebels were led offensively by Daryn Glenn and Elisa Brochado and their 25 and 20 kills, respectively. Both players threw down 11 kills apiece against Colorado. Against UC Davis, Brochado led the team with nine to Glenn's seven kills.

Stephanie Thelen dished out the majority of the sets last weekend and registered 48 assists with a career-high 25 coming in a loss to UC Davis.

Defensively, three Rebels had 20 or more digs last weekend with Taylor Richard leading the trio with 30. Richard had 18 against Colorado and 11 more vs. UC Davis. Joining Richard with 20+ digs were Glenn (22) and Makenzie Moea'i (20).

At the net, Madeline Westman had 11 total blocks with two of those coming as solo efforts. Westman registered six total blocks (two solo) against Northern Colorado.

CHANGING OF THE TIMES: The UNLV Rebels have adjusted the match times for the Friday portion of their UNLV Classic slated for Sept. 16-17. Both contests on Friday, Sept. 16, have both been pushed back 30 minutes. Kicking off the days action will be Baylor vs. San Francisco at 5:00 pm followed by a 7:30 pm tilt between UNLV and Fresno State.

SMALL-SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will appear on television once during the 2011 regular season. UNLV's contest at San Diego State on Oct. 21 will be aired live on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm from Peterson Gym.
