2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Four

FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels stay in Las Vegas for another weekend and host their own UNLV Classic this Friday and Saturday. UNLV welcomes Baylor, Fresno State and San Francisco to the desert for the two-day tournament held at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels open up with a match on Friday night against Fresno State (7:30 pm) before playing a pair on Saturday against San Francisco (11:30 am) and Baylor (7:30 pm).

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels play two matches next week with the first on the road and the other at home. UNLV will venture north to play the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack on Wednesday, Sept. 21 (6:00 pm) before hosting the San Diego State Aztecs on Friday, Sept. 23 (7:00 pm) to open up Mountain West action.

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels went 2-1 last weekend at its own UNLV Invitational. UNLV opened up with consecutive wins over Southern Utah (3-2) and Eastern Washington (3-1) to run its winning streak to five matches. Unfortunately, the Rebels suffered a 3-2, heartbreaking loss to Cal State Northridge in the tournament's finale to snap its victorious run.

Madeline Westman, Makenzie Moea'i and Sekola Falemaka were named to the all-tournament team.

The Rebels were led by a pair of double-doubles from Sekola Falemaka and one each from Daryn Glenn and Stephanie Thelen. Falemaka had 11 kills and 11 digs vs. Southern Utah (Sept. 9) and followed that performance up with a 14 and 16 effort vs. Eastern Washington (Sept. 10). Glenn and Thelen's double-doubles came against Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10). Glenn combined 12 kills with 20 digs for the feat, while Thelen paired 53 kills with 15 digs.

Westman led the team in kills (44), kills per set (3.14) and hitting efficiency (.375) and also added nine digs and nine blocks (three solo).

Moea'i joined Westman in the 40-kill club with 43 of her own. She averaged 3.07 kills per set and hit .229. She also had nine blocks (four solo) and eight digs.

In all, UNLV had five players throw down at least 26 kills. Falemaka (32), Candice Thomas (29) and Glenn (26) rounded out the quintet.

Thelen led the team in assists, as she dished out 158 of the team's tally of 176 on the weekend. She averaged 11.29 assists per set. She also contributed 31 digs, five kills, five blocks (one solo) and two aces.

The back row came up large for the Rebels and notched 230 digs for a 16.43 digs per-set average. Six players registered at least 12 digs with Taylor Richard leading the quintet with 58 (4.14 dps). Glenn was second with 44 (3.14), while Falemaka was third with 40 (3.64). Thelen (31), Allison Davies (23) and Layne Wilson (12) rounded out the six pack.

At the net, Thomas led the team in blocks with 12 (four solo).

CHANGING OF THE TIMES: The UNLV Rebels have adjusted the match times for the Friday portion of their UNLV Classic slated for Sept. 16-17. Both contests on Friday, Sept. 16, have both been pushed back 30 minutes. Kicking off the days action will be Baylor vs. San Francisco at 5:00 pm followed by a 7:30 pm tilt between UNLV and Fresno State.,
