2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Three

FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels return home to the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion this weekend after spending their first six matches on the road. The Rebels welcome Cal State Northridge, Eastern Washington and Southern Utah to Las Vegas for the two-day UNLV Invitational. UNLV opens up with a Friday night tussle with Southern Utah (7:00 pm) before facing Eastern Washington (12:30 pm) and Cal State Northridge (7:00 pm) on Saturday.

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels stay in Las Vegas for its fourth and final tournament of the 2011 season with their own UNLV Classic (Sept. 16-17). UNLV will welcome Baylor, Fresno State and San Francisco to the Cox Pavilion for the two-day event.

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels went 3-0 last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. UNLV swept Central Arkansas in its first match and then had to go the distance in back-to-back five-set wins over Morehead State and Northwestern State. Madeline Westman and Elisa Brochado were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Rebels were led by a pair of double-doubles from both Brochado and Stephanie Thelen. Brochado had 14 kills and 16 digs vs. Morehead State and followed that up with 13 and 12 vs. Northwestern State. Thelen notched her first one against MSU with 53 assists and 11 digs and got her second vs. NSU with 44 and 12.

Brochado led the team last weekend in kills with 36 for a 2.77 kills per-set average. She also had 34 digs, six blocks (two solo), two aces and one assist.

Thelen led the team last weekend in assists with 131 for a 10.08 assists per-set average. She also had 27 digs, 11 assisted blocks, three kills and two aces.

In all, the offense had four players notched 27 or more kills. Makenzie Moea'i followed closely behind Brochado's production with 35 kills of her own, including a career-high 20 vs. Morehead State. Westman was third with 34, while Daryn Glenn rounded out the quartet with 27.

Glenn and Westman came up big offensively at the service line with 13 of the team's 21 aces. Glenn led the duo with nine, while Westman had the other four.

The back-row defense was led by Taylor Richard and her 60 digs (4.62 dps). Richard topped out at 24 digs vs. Northwestern State. Overall, five players amassed 23 or more digs last weekend. Brochado was second with 34. Thelen was third with 27, while Glenn (25) and Allison Davies (23) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

At the net, Westman led the blocking brigade with 15 blocks (two solo). Candice Thomas was second with 13 (all assisted). Glenn and Thelen tied for third with 11 each.

CHANGING OF THE TIMES: The UNLV Rebels have adjusted the match times for the Friday portion of their UNLV Classic slated for Sept. 16-17. Both contests on Friday, Sept. 16, have both been pushed back 30 minutes. Kicking off the days action will be Baylor vs. San Francisco at 5:00 pm followed by a 7:30 pm tilt between UNLV and Fresno State.

SMALL-SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will appear on television once during the 2011 regular season. UNLV's contest at San Diego State on Oct. 21 will be aired live on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm from Peterson Gym.
