Global Youth Service Day To Be Held Saturday

April 20, 2012

WHAT
More than 350 students from After-School All-Stars Las Vegas (ASASLV) and Special Olympics Nevada are participating in the 23rd annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), the world's largest and longest-running youth service campaign.

This year's local ASAS Global Youth Service Day event will feature dozens of sports stations hosted by more than 40 student-athletes from UNLV. Each station is designed to educate youth struggling from at-risk backgrounds and/or developmental disabilities about the importance of fitness and nutrition as well as provide a unified sports experience for all participants. UNLV head men's soccer coach Rich Ryerson will address the group at the beginning of the event. After-School All-Stars and Special Olympics participants will work together and do their part in promoting respect and teamwork. Youth will also receive a healthy meal provided by Three Square Food Bank and drinks provided by Coca-Cola.

GYSD events are planned in more than 100 countries this year, involving millions of children and youth. Events vary per location, but all focus on global issues including health, literacy, childhood hunger and the environment.

GYSD is organized by YSA (Youth Service America) and its Global Youth Service Network, which includes sponsors State Farm, UnitedHealthcare, Disney, Sodexo, The Corporation for National and Community Service and Learn and Serve America.

Jonas Watt, ASASLV National Youth Advisory Board Leader, was awarded the Disney Friends for Change grant in the amount of $1,000 for Global Youth Service Day to help support "Being an Active All-Star".
