LAS VVEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former UNLV defensive back Quinton Pointer went from undrafted free agent to full-fledged NFL player on Friday as he was one of three Rebel alums to survive final cut-downs.
Pointer (5-9, 195) signed a free-agent deal with the St. Louis Rams after not hearing his name called in the draft and made the most of his opportunity, earning an active roster spot as a cornerback. The Fort Myers, Fla., native (Mariner High School) was a four-year starter in the Rebel secondary from 2007-11 (redshirting in 2010). As a senior he ranked fourth on the team with 59 tackles and tied for the squad lead in forced fumbles with three. He also grabbed two of his six career interceptions last fall for the Scarlet & Gray.
Pointer joined a pair of veteran players who played at UNLV -- cornerback Eric Wright (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and center Joe Hawley (Atlanta Falcons) -- in making NFL teams in 2012.
The news was not good for two former UNLV defensive linemen - Isaako Aaitui (Miami Dolphins) and Martin Tevaseu (New York Jets) - who were both waived Friday in the final cuts.
Other former Rebs that were released from their teams over the last two weeks of camp were wide receiver Phillip Payne (San Diego Chargers), linebacker K.C. Asiodu (Chicago Bears), defensive back Deante' Purvis (San Francisco 49ers) and offensive lineman Matt Murphy (Cincinnati Bengals).
