Rebel Softball Readies For Three-Day Fall Classic

Oct. 25, 2013

2013 UNLV Fall Classic Schedule

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After weeks of individual workouts followed by team practices, the UNLV softball program is ready to see some unfamiliar faces, for once. The Rebels will host their Fall Classic next weekend from Nov. 1-3 at Eller Media Stadium on the campus of UNLV (corners of Swenson and Harmon).

In all, 11 games will be played over the three days by teams ranging from Nevada, Arizona and California. UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) will play five games apiece, while Cypress College (California), Porterville College (California) and Yavapai College (Arizona) will all play four each.

The Scarlet & Gray will kick off the competition on the morning of Friday, Nov. 1, against Porterville (9:00 am) and then Cypress (11:00 am). They will play once on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 3:00 pm vs. Yavapai. On the final day of action, UNLV will face Yavapai at 11:00 am followed by a contest against CSN at 1:00 pm.

The Rebels are skippered by head coach Lisa Dodd, who enters her second year at the helm of the program. In her first season, Dodd led the squad to a 21-31 overall record and a sixth-place finish in the Mountain West with a 7-11 mark. Three of the team's wins came against Top 25 competition - #18/18 Louisville, #--/23 Virginia Tech and #19/18 Tulsa.

The squad returns 12 letterwinners, seven of which were primary starters this past spring. Stefany Valentino earned 2013 NFCA Division I All-West Region Second Team honors after her and three others - Emily Haslinger, Amanda Oliveto and Tayler Van Acker - were named MW All-Conference members.

In total, there are 19 players on the 2013-14 roster with seven fresh faces. Lexie McKinnon (junior) and Alex Petrolia (sophomore) are transfers from Feather River College and Salt Lake Community College, respectively. Five freshmen - Brittany Abacherli, Kwyn Cooper, Morgan Ettinger, Sydney Mundell and Shelby Smith - round out the newcomers from California and Texas (Smith).
