LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball program held its annual Alumnae Game on Saturday with the 2013-14 edition knocking off a squad of former Rebels by a 9-3 score.
Samantha Juarez broke open a scoreless tie with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third that spurred a three-run, four-hit outburst. Kwyn Cooper followed Juarez with a single to left before taking second on a sacrifice bunt from Stefany Valentino. Garie Blando then followed with a single of her own that pushed Cooper to third before a throwing error to the plate allowed her to score. Blando, who took second on the errant throw, scored with ease a batter later when Emily Haslinger doubled to center.
The Scarlet & Gray tacked on another run in the fourth off an RBI single by Lexie McKinnon. Jamie DePippo scored on the base hit after leading off the frame with a walk. DePippo moved into scoring position after a single by Emilie Valadez. Shortly thereafter, DePippo and Valadez successfully pulled off a double steal before McKinnon recorded her hit.
The alumnae finally got on the board with a two-run single by Ashli Holland in the fifth. Korin Cuico and Stephanie Bregante scattered singles to start the offensive before Holland cut the deficit to three runs at 5-2.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the score would get as the current Rebels scored five times in the bottom of the fifth. Valentino and Valadez connected on back-to-back doubles to produce one run. The former came around to score one batter later when a throwing error occurred off a ball put in play by Haslinger, who immediately scored off an RBI single by Monreal. Blando then capped the scoring with a two-run dinger to push the lead to seven - 9-2.
The alumnae picked up a run in the seventh with assistance from a single and two wild pitches.
Amanda Oliveto and Morgan Ettinger pitched seven strong innings for the Rebels. The duo held the alumnae to a .200 batting average (5-for-25). They struck out two against six walks and one hit batter. Oliveto threw the first three innings of the game, while Ettinger tossed the final four.
In attendance for the alumnae team were: Becky McDonald-Pugh, Ashli Holland, Stephanie Bregante, Tara Bendt, Marissa Nichols, Traci Odegard, Julie Crandall, Tara Woodall, Korin Cuico, Bridget Byrne, Kylie Wagner, Samantha Henry, Felicia Benjamins, Arica Painter-Dorff, Nicole Truax-Chacon, Geney Orris, Amie Stewart and Lori Harrigan.
