LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former NFL player and coach Tim Hauck has joined the UNLV football staff as defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach, head coach Bobby Hauck announced Wednesday.
Tim Hauck, 46, served last season in the NFL as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns, overseeing the defensive backs. He spent the 2009-10 seasons as assistant secondary coach for the Tennessee Titans. Prior to joining the Titans, he coached safeties at UCLA for a defense that ranked second in the Pac-10 Conference in pass defense in 2008. Before that, he spent four years at his alma mater, the University of Montana, overseeing the entire secondary in 2007 after three years working with the safeties from 2004-2006. In 2007, Montana ranked 10th nationally in pass efficiency defense while totaling 17 interceptions and allowing only eight passing touchdowns.
"We are certainly fortunate to convince someone with Tim's experience and pedigree to come here and work with us," Bobby Hauck said. "The other thing that is important is cohesion in the staff and Tim is certainly someone that this coaching staff knows and is comfortable with. He had numerous other opportunities but chose UNLV because he wants to be part of what we're doing here."
The younger brother of Bobby Hauck, Tim played safety in the NFL for 13 seasons, retiring in 2002. He originally signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent in 1990 and went on to play for Green Bay, Seattle, Denver, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
"I enjoy the NFL but this was a great opportunity for me," Tim Hauck said. "UNLV is a team on the rise and I look forward to working for a football program that is extra meaningful to me because of the four years my brother has put into it."
A two-time First Team All-American (1988-89), Hauck played safety at Montana for three seasons after originally starting his college career at Pacific University in Oregon. He was voted the Big Sky Conference's defensive MVP as both a junior and a senior. He left ranked third in Grizzly history with 305 career tackles and third with 15 career interceptions (all compiled in just three years).
Born Dec. 20, 1966, Hauck was an all-state quarterback and defensive back while playing for his father, Bob Hauck Sr., at Sweet Grass High School in Big Timber, Mont. He earned his bachelor's degree in business education from UM in 1990, and married his wife, Denali, in 2008.
