LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former Northwestern transfer Adonis Smithrushed for a game-high 71 yards on just 10 carries, including a scoring rush, to help Team Scarlet post a 13-0 victory over Team Gray at the annual UNLV Spring Showcase at Rebel Park Friday evening.

With a family-friendly crowd of 2,100 enjoying beautiful April weather at the campus event, Smith was a focal point as the only scholarship running back on the field because rising senior Tim Cornettsat out as he did all spring while getting healthy. Smith, an Oakland, Calif., product that sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility with the Rebels.

Smith's two-yard scoring rush gave the Scarlet its first touchdown while redshirt freshman quarterback Troy Hawthornealso ran one in from six yards out. The teams went through some goal-line work at the end of the event but those scores and stats were not included in the final box.

Sophomore quarterback Nick Sherry completed 7 of 10 attempts for 59 yards and threw an interception to converted receiver Jonavaughn Williams. Tight end Jack Phillips caught three passes for 34 yards for the Scarlet while Taylor Spencer's three grabs for 35 yards paced the Gray. Defensive lineman Jordan Sparkman led the Scarlet with five total tackles while freshman Trent Langham had the same amount for the Gray. Tau Lotuleleihad the game's other interception, picking off Hawthorne and returning it 13 yards for the Scarlet. Each side also recorded a pair of quarterback sacks.

"We had a great crowd and we want to thank everyone for coming out," said head coach Bobby Hauck, who is heading into his fourth season in Las Vegas. "What would be considered our first offense had some good yards today. The defense played well. They did some good things. It was physical on both sides, which is really good. We ran it fairly well. Maybe more than we anticipated since it was going well."

The Spring Showcase signaled the official end of the 15-pratice session for the Rebels. Hauck said he is looking forward to UNLV opening its 46th season of football on August 29 when it heads to Minnesota for the first time in program history.

"We got a lot of live, physical work done and coming out of that healthy for the most part is big. One of the things we just talked about as a team is that we are now on to next season's opponents. We had a great, physical session this spring so now we need to go and focus on the opponent. Overall, this was a good spring and we're proud of the progress we made."
