LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Defending Mountain West champion UNLV, which kicks off its fall individual tournament slate next week, will face a new divisional format in the league play in the spring as the program announced its 2013-14 schedule Friday.
Head coach Kevin Cory, who is beginning his 15th season at the school, will send various-sized player contingents to at least four individual events before dual-season beings in late January.
"This year's schedule is very strong," Cory said. "We have some top non-conference opponents. The MW schedule will be really tough with us being split into divisions now. Our team is looking great these first couple of weeks and we are excited about the challenges ahead."
First up is the annual UNLV Invitational on Sept. 20-22, which will be feature players from a record eight different schools, including the Lady Rebels. The fall lineup includes for the fourth straight year hosting the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional at the Fertitta Tennis Complex from Oct. 9-13. The program also hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 17-19, 2014. It is there that a collection of singles and doubles players from top programs such as Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, North Carolina, Duke and Oregon are scheduled to battle UNLV's contingent.
The Lady Rebels, who finished last season ranked 49th in the nation and No. 1 in the Mountain Region, will travel to Berkeley, Calif., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament on Jan. 24-25. The sixth-year, 64-team event will have host sites around the nation and UNLV will be paired first with Washington (ranked 46th last season) before taking on either Santa Clara (65th) or host California (ninth) the following day.
The Fertitta schedule opens Feb.7 with New Mexico State in town to start a three-day homestand. A trip over to Malibu, Calif., will see the Lady Rebels face Pepperdine on Valentine's Day, followed by a neutral-site matchup with Arizona State two days later. An eight-match homestand follows, highlighted by visits from Big Ten schools Michigan (March 5) and Ohio State (March 12) and Pac-12 member Oregon (March 26).
UNLV will open league play with a match at Fresno State on March 30, followed by a home date with San Jose State on April 4 and Cory's first-ever visit to Nevada, Reno on April 6. After a final non-conference outing vs. Southern Utah on April 11, the Lady Rebs will celebrate Senior Day by hosting arch-rival San Diego State on April 19 to close out the regular season.
Women's tennis is just one of two Mountain West-sponsored sports along with football, to employ the new Mountain and West divisions, which led to the abbreviated league slate of just four matches. All 10 schools will then gather in Fresno on April 23-27 for the 2014 MW Championships. The NCAA First & Second Rounds are scheduled for May 10-12 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place in Athens, Ga., from May 16-26.
