UNLV senior forward Salvador Bernal converted a penalty kick in the first half to give the Rebels both their fourth straight win and sole possession of first place in the WAC with a 1-0 win at Utah Valley in men's soccer action Sunday at Clyde Field. The victory improved UNLV to 9-2-1 overall and 3-0 in league action. The Wolverines dropped to 5-4-1, 1-1-1 in the WAC after suffering their first home loss of the year.
"We took six points on the road this weekend after shutting out Utah Valley in a very cold and windy game," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "Utah Valley is a big, strong and athletic team that gave us fits on attacking restarts. We managed the game well enough though to maintain the lead in the second half."
The action was all from the Rebels in the first half as they took eight of the nine total shot attempts over the first 45 minutes. UNLV went ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute when a foul was called inside the box, giving the Rebels a penalty kick. Bernal scored on the kick, a blast right down middle for his seventh goal of the year and league-leading third game-winner.
With the lead and with the wind against them in the second half, UNLV was content to play a more defensive approach after halftime. Utah Valley held a 6-2 edge on shots over the final 45 minutes, but could not get past Rebel goalkeeper Ryan Harding who posted four saves in the half. That gives him a WAC-high 6.1 shutouts for the year, which is also the second-best mark in UNLV history. His 11.1 career shutouts ranked him third all-time.
UNLV finished the game with a 10-7 edge on shots and 6-4 on shots on goal, while Utah Valley had eight corner kicks in the contest to two for the Rebels. Collin Partee collected five saves in the net for the Wolverines.
The Rebels return to Las Vegas for a two-game homestand, starting with a Friday, 7 pm contest against Air Force at Peter Johann Memorial Field. It will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night, and all fans wearing pink will receive half price admission.
