UMKC was held to just three shots total on the afternoon, but scored on two of those three shots to grab a 2-1 upset victory over UNLV in WAC men's soccer action Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss snapped the Rebels' five-game losing streak, dropping them to 10-3-1, and tied for first in the WAC with 12 points at 4-1.
The Rebels suffered just their second home loss of the season despite a commanding 16-3 edge on shots, including 10-0 in the second half. They couldn't recover from the opening 20 minutes however in which they found themselves down by a 2-0 margin. The Roos' (3-8-2, 1-3-1) scored the day's first goal in the 5th minute when Tato Chiaparro ran into the box and one timed a lob pass that entered the middle of the box. Chiaparro got his foot on the ball before it hit the ground, redirecting it to the right side for a 1-0 edge. Wes White received the assist on the play.
UMKC increased its edge to 2-0 in the 20th minute. Nick Cramer drove the ball into the left side of the box, and with Rebel goalkeeper Ryan Harding charging out, Cramer blasted a shot high into the top of the net. Matteo Barsalona was credited with the assist.
Finding themselves down by two for only the third time this season, the Rebels cut into the edge in the 29th minute. Julien Dragomir started the play when he took a shot from the right side that was blocked by UMKC goalkeeper Chris McGaughey. Kyle Mellies was on the opposite post, and in perfect position to send the ball back into the net for the score, making it a 2-1 contest.
Entering halftime down 2-1, UNLV came out looking for the equalizer. The Rebels' chances looked better in the 63rd minute when a Roo player received his second yellow card and was sent off, leading UNLV playing a man up the rest of the way. UNLV could not take advantage however, as McGaughey recorded three of his five total saves in the second half to preserve the win for UMKC.
In addition to their 16-3 edge on shots, UNLV also led the visitors in corner kicks, 10-2. Shots on goal were 6-3 in favor of the Rebels.
UNLV returns to action on Friday, Oct. 24, with a road contest at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, at 5 pm (PT).
