All About The Rebels
UNLV is set to open WAC play this weekend after recording its best non-conference record in 12 years at 6-2-1. The Rebels hope to continue the momentum from that big start as they host travel partner Grand Canyon on Sunday at 1 pm in what will be the third all-time meeting between the schools, and the second as conference rivals.
The Rebels have had great success on their home field this season, as they are averaging 2.2 goals per game, while allowing a stingy 0.33 goals per game. In fact, only once of the six home games as UNLV conceded a goal, against then No. 4 UC Irvine. A victory on Friday would match the Rebels' total wins from a year ago.
UNLV brings in a high powered offense, led by senior forward Salvador Bernal, who leads the conference and is ranked in the top 20 in the nation with six goals. In goal for the Rebels is Ryan Harding, the preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year, while senior defender Kyle Mellies has been a key factor in helping the Rebels post a league-best five shutouts this season.
Scouting Grand Canyon
The Antelopes bring a 2-5-1 mark into the weekend, and have currently lost its past two games while the last win was on Sept. 19 at Sacramento State, a 1-0 overtime win. Grand Canyon's struggles have mostly come from its offense, as the team has scored just two goals over the past four games, while it was shutout in both losses. In fact, of the team's seven goals this year, five game in just two games.
Three players all have two goals each for GCU: Al Sanchez Garcia (six points), Niki Jackson (five points) and Nieblas Rodriguez (four points). In goal for the majority of the season has been Kendyl Day, with a 1.71 GAA and 16 saves in 683 minutes of action.
Next Time Out
The Rebels play their first two conference road games of the season, at Seattle on Friday, Oct. 10 at 5 pm and at Utah Valley on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 12 pm.
