All About The Rebels
UNLV is one of four teams currently tied for first in the WAC with three points after the first weekend of play, but now face a tough challenge this weekend with a pair of road games at regionally ranked Seattle and Utah Valley, teams that are a combined 6-1-1 on their home fields thus far in 2014.
After a hot start at 5-0, the Rebels went the next three games 0-2-1, but have since bounced back. UNLV has won its past two contests by a combined 5-0 margin, and will look to bring its top-10 offense on the road. The Rebels have scored at least two goals in eight of 10 games this year, including all three games away from Las Vegas. A win in either game this weekend would also surpass last year's total win mark.
UNLV's high powered offense is led by senior forward Salvador Bernal, who leads the conference and is ranked in the top 20 in the nation with six goals. In goal for the Rebels is Ryan Harding, the preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year and the conference shutout leader (5.1), while senior defender Kyle Mellies has been a key factor on the Rebels' backline this season.
Scouting Seattle
The Redhawks, the preseason favorites and defending league champions, are 5-3-1 on the year and just one spot out of being ranked in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll. They trail the Rebels in the conference standings though after opening up league play with a tie at Utah Valley.
A pair of players are leading the team on offense, as both Brady Ballew and Jeff Rose have nine points this season. In the goal is Shane Haworth, who is boasting a 1.41 GAA this season with 40 saves and four shutouts.
Scouting Utah Valley
The Wolverines have made an impressive showing thus far in the first year of the program, with a 4-3-1 mark through their first eight games including a 2-1 home win over ranked Denver on Sept. 19. Utah Valley is currently undefeated on its home field with a 3-0-1 mark.
Matt Gay is pacing the offense with 13 points off five goals and three assists. Two goalies have shared time in the net, though Collin Partree (0.88) has seen the majority of the time.
