All About The Rebels
UNLV is the No. 1 seed in this week's WAC Tournament after claiming its first regular season championship since winning the Big West title in 1987, thanks to posting 22 points off a 7-2-1 league record. Overall UNLV has posted 13 wins this year, tied for the sixth most in team history and the most since that same 1987 squad finished at 15-4.
While UNLV receives a bye into the semifinal round, its two possible opponents on Friday are ones that caused the Rebels problems during the season. Fourth-seed UMKC upset UNLV 2-1 in Las Vegas on Oct. 19, despite the Rebels holding a 16-3 edge on shots in that contest. Fifth-seed San Jose State and UNLV meanwhile played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on the Rebels' Senior Day on Nov. 2.
Friday will be just the fourth appearance for UNLV in a conference tournament semifinal (2001, 2002, 2009), as the Big West and MPSF did not feature full tournaments for a significant number of seasons. UNLV has played in two conference championship games, the 1983 Big West, a loss to Fresno State, and the 1984 title game, a 2-1 win over San Jose State.
