All About The Rebels
UNLV is playing in its first conference championship game since the 1984 Big West title match, and will be looking to claim the tournament title and the WAC auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament, which would make it the first NCAA appearance for the Rebels since 1988, and the sixth all-time.
The top-seeded Rebels cruised into Sunday's game after a 3-0 shutout of UMKC on Friday. That pushed the Rebels' record to 14-4-2 on the year. The 14 victories ties for the fifth-most in team history, and the most since 1991 (14-5 overall). It also ties for the second most wins in the nation this year, just one behind national leader Syracuse (15).
During the regular season the Rebels lost to two WAC opponents, the same two that UNLV is facing in this weekend's tournament. UNLV already avenged its loss to UMKC, and will now look to do the same against the sixth-seed Roadrunners on Sunday. In the first meeting, UNLV looked to have the game won thanks to an early goal, but CSUB scored a pair of goals in the 76th and 77th minute to steal the win.
Sunday is a matchup of the top top offenses in the WAC. UNLV is averaging 2.15 goals per game, while Bakersfield ranks second with 1.81. Both teams rank 1-2 in shots per game as well, 14.1 for UNLV and 14.95 for the Rebels. Where UNLV has had its success this year is on defense, holding its opponents to just 8.9 shots per game. Bakersfield meanwhile has seen its opponents average 11.3 shots per game.
The championship game will also feature two outstanding freshman. UNLV's Danny Musovski was the difference in the semifinal win over UMKC, having a hand in all three goals, . Bakersfield meanwhile counters with Julian Zamora, the WAC's leading scorer with 24 points (11 goals, two assists).
UNLV has played in two conference championship games all-time, the 1983 Big West, a loss to Fresno State, and the 1984 title game, a 2-1 win over San Jose State.
