Nov. 18, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Thanks to an outstanding tournament performance in leading UNLV to the WAC men's soccer championship title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1988, Rebel freshman and Las Vegas native Danny Musovski has been named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week, the association announced on Tuesday. While the Rebels have had several players named to national teams of the week before, Musovski is the first-ever player in UNLV history to be named national player of the week.
Musovski, a forward for the Rebels, was named the WAC Tournament MVP after scoring once and adding two assists in UNLV's run to the tournament title. He also converted his attempt during the penalty kick shootout to help the Rebels beat CSU Bakersfield for the title.
Musovski was the star of UNLV's Friday night victory in the WAC semifinals against UMKC. The freshman had a hand in all three goals as well, starting with a give-and-go near the end of the first half. Musovski took a pass from Julian Dragomir and then fed it back to him as he streaked into the box and slotted a shot to the left side that was slightly deflected before sneaking inside the left post. That put UNLV ahead 1-0 in the 41st minute. The lead went to 2-0 after Musovski, who had already been pulled down twice in the box, was taken down for a third time and this time a penalty kick was awarded that was converted by Kevin Partida. Musovski sealed the game in the 84th minute after he collected a free kick, spun around, and blasted in a shot from nine yards out for a 3-0 Rebel edge.
In the WAC championship game against Bakersfield on Sunday, Musovski assisted on UNLV's first score of the game, sending in a cross that was headed in by Corey Ackley in the first half that put the Rebels up 1-0. The Roadrunners came back to tie the game and it would eventually go to the penalty kick shootout. Musovski was the second shooter for the Rebels, and converted his attempt to put UNLV ahead 2-1. They would eventually win the shootout by a 4-2 margin.
The Rebels finished the regular season tied for third in the nation with 14 wins, while they rank in the top five in total goals with 44. Musovski was also named to the WAC All-Tournament Team.
UNLV opens play in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday with a first round game at UC Irvine that will kick off at 7 pm.
