Playing its second straight game without leading scorer Salvador Bernal, UNLV had the shots but couldn't finish off the scoring chances and had to settle for a 0-0 double-overtime tie with San Jose State in WAC men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The draw on Senior Day leaves the Rebels (12-4-2 overall) at 6-2-1 in conference play, and with 19 points they have a three-point lead over Seattle and Incarnate Word in the team standings. The Spartans meanwhile moved to 6-8-2, 4-2-2 in the WAC.
"We're still in the lead in the conference and still in a position to win the regular season title next weekend," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "It's been a great season overall for our seniors, and happy with the performance of all the guys today. At 12-4-2, that's a good season, we just need to finish strong next week, get the win at Grand Canyon, win the conference and get the No. 1 seed in the WAC tournament."
UNLV held San Jose State to just six total shots in the game, and only one shot on goal. That came late in the first overtime period on a blast to the far post, but a leaping Ryan Harding deflected the ball to the right to preserve the shutout. The Rebels meanwhile attempted 14 shots in the game, though only three on goal.
Of those three shots, one was off a free kick by Bradley Kamdem in the first half, a curving shot that just narrowly missed dropping under the crossbar for a score, as it instead hit the bottom of the crossbar before bouncing out. UNLV's best chance of the game came in the final minutes of the second half, when freshman Danny Musovski eluded several defenders, drove in from the left baseline and got past Spartan goalkeeper Felix Petermann, His shot however was was just high on the goal, leaving the game still scoreless in the 88th minute.
After holding shot advantages of 5-2 in the first half and 7-2 in the second half, UNLV was outshot by SJSU 2-1 in the first overtime. The Rebels meanwhile had the only shot of the second extra period, but again it did not result in a score, leaving UNLV with its second scoreless tie of the season.
Harding finished with one save to move his conference-leading shutout total to 8.1, while Petermann made three saves in goal for the Spartans. SJSU held an 8-6 edge on corner kicks.
UNLV has Friday night off before closing out the regular season at travel partner Grand Canyon on Sunday at 1 pm in Phoenix, Ariz. A win against GCU would give the Rebels at least a share of the regular season conference, as well as the No. 1 seed in the league tournament.
