Dec. 10, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The awards parade continues for UNLV men's soccer as a school-record four players were named NSCAA First Team All-West Region while a fifth player received third-team honors, the national organization announced on Wednesday. That easily tops the previous best showing by the Rebels on the all-region teams, a total of three in 1985, while the previous high for most first-team selections was two, also in 1985.
Receiving first-team honors this season was Salvador Bernal, Kyle Mellies, Rodrigo Fuentes, Ryan Harding. Named to the third team was Julian Portugal. It marks the third career region honor for Bernal after two third-team appearances, and the first honor for the other four selections.
The five helped the Rebels to one of the best seasons in school history, as UNLV swept the WAC regular season and tournament championships while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. UNLV also received its first national ranking since 1992 after making an appearance at No. 23 in Soccer America in September. The team's final record of 14-5-3 tied for the fifth-most wins in program history.
Bernal, the first player in UNLV history to be named first-team all-conference all four years and the WAC Offensive Player of the Year, was the top offensive leader for the top scoring offense in the WAC. The Las Vegas native ranked in the top ten in the league in every offensive category, scoring eight goals and adding three assists for 19 points. He was tied for the WAC-lead in game-winning goals with three, which included the only goal in a 1-0 upset victory over No. 14 UMBC in September in Las Vegas.
Mellies anchored a Rebel defense that held teams to just 9.4 shots per contest, while UNLV posted 10 team shutouts during the season. Another Las Vegas native, the senior played just as big a role offensively this season as he tied for third on the team with 12 points off five goals and a pair of assists. That helped him earn both WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and First-Team All-WAC recognition.
Harding, a senior from Troutdale, Ore., finished the season with 9.1 shutouts, the second-best season total in team history. A first-team All-WAC selection at goalkeeper, he came up big in the WAC Tournament, only allowing one goal over two games while also making two stops in the penalty kick shootout in the championship game, won by UNLV 4-2 over Bakersfield. For his career he finished with 14.1 shutouts to rank second all-time.
Fuentes, a junior midfielder and San Diego native, played his way onto the first-team after a strong offensive season in which he posted 13 total points, tying him for third on the squad. He was a second-team All-WAC selection as well.
Portugal has been the key player in UNLV's midfield for the past four years. The senior midfielder from Las Vegas posted six assists that had him ranked among the nation's leaders for the majority of the season. A First Team All-WAC honoree, his 15 career assists ranked him 11th in team history.
