LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Just one week removed from earning Mountain West All-Conference First Team and MW Player of the Week recognition, UNLV volleyball's Bree Hammel was tabbed to the AVCA Division I All-Pacific South Region Honorable Mention Team.
Hammel, a redshirt sophomore from Las Vegas, had a breakout season in 2014. She led the Scarlet & Gray in hitting efficiency (.343) and all three blocking categories (174 total, 25 solo, 149 assisted). She had 12 contests with 10 or more kills with a career-best 20 coming in a come-from-behind victory at New Mexico (Nov. 6). She hit .300 or better in 20 affairs, which included a staggering .714 display vs. San Jose State (Nov. 15). She tallied at least five total blocks in 22 matches and topped out at 11 twice vs. Seton Hall (Sept. 6) and Fresno State (Oct. 25). In all, she had 298 kills, 25 aces, 12 assists and 66 digs to go along with her blocking figures.
As of Dec. 6, she ranks sixth overall nationally in blocks per set (1.51) and eighth in total blocks (174), which has helped UNLV place third (3.09) and fourth (358.0) in those two categories, respectively. She is 84th overall in hitting percentage (.343) and in turn the Rebels are 51st (.245) in the most recent NCAA statistical report.
"Bree has truly had a great year, which is a result of the work she had put in this last spring and summer," said Rebel head coach Cindy Fredrick. "I am so proud of what Bree has accomplished and look forward to two more years with her on the court for the Rebels."
The Bonanza High School graduate was chosen the MW's Player of the Week on Nov. 10 and Dec. 1.
Hammel joins Rebel alumnae Lauren Miramontes (2003-07) and Camille Cunningham (2005-08) as the only members of the program to garner all-region status. Miramontes was named to both first team and honorable mention in 2007 and 2005, respectively. Cunningham was honorable mention in 2008.
