Rebels Clinch Series Against Spartans

Final Stats

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - Something about pitching in the Bay Area just works for UNLV junior John Richy. He pitched the second complete game of his career and led UNLV baseball (13-4, 7-1 Mountain West) to a 2-1 victory over San José State (5-15, 2-6 MW) on Saturday at Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans threatened the Rebels' lead in the ninth inning after they opened the frame with a single and took advantage of a UNLV error to give San José State runners on first and second with no outs.

SJSU then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but it turned into a fielder's choice after the Rebels threw out the lead runner at third. Richy induced a fly ball to center field for the second out, but then loaded the bases by walking Matt Lopez. Richy made up for the walk by striking out the final batter on three straight pitches to secure the UNLV win.

Richy allowed one run, which was unearned, on three hits and struck out six while walking three in 9.0 innings of work. His second career complete game came nearly one year to the day after his first complete game and was 20 miles down the Bayshore Freeway. Richy's first complete game was a 5-1 victory at Stanford on March 10, 2013, where he allowed only two hits.

The Spartans, for the second consecutive day, opened the scoring by plating a run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Rebels came back and tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Morgan Stotts singled to drive in T.J. White from second.

UNLV took the lead in the sixth inning after Justin Jones and White hit back-to-back singles to open the frame and Patrick Armstrong drove in Jones on a sacrifice fly.

White stayed hot at the plate against the Spartans, as he finished with three hits for the second straight day. He was 3-for-4 and scored one run on Saturday and is 6-for-9 on the weekend. Jones was the only other Rebel with multiple hits in the game, as he finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.

UNLV will go for the sweep of San José State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the action live on UNLVRebels.com through to the Mountain West Network.
