LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team opened a Sunday doubleheader by upsetting No. 70 Marquette 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels turned in arguably their best performance of the season while improving to 6-7 on the year while the Golden Eagles fell to 9-6.
UNLV took two of three doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead. Ace Matias and Denys Pume downed Dan Mamalat and Vukasin Teofanovic 8-6 at the top spot and Willie Sublette and Tamas Batyi got by Cameron Tehrani and Nick Dykema by the same score on court three.
The Rebels did not let up in singles play, taking all four straight-set matches to clinch things. Matias downed Mamalat 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1; Pume fought off Teofanovic 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2; Batyi won 6-3, 7-5 over Logon Collins at No. 3; and Dimitar Petrov eased by Tehrani 6-0, 6-2 on court five.
Marquette won the other two matches in super-tiebreakers to avoid being shut out.
