LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball junior Erick Fedde has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, which will require season-ending surgery, commonly called Tommy John surgery, head coach Tim Chambers announced Saturday.
"I really feel bad for Erick and his family," Chambers said. "It is really a tough situation because, in my opinion, he has been the best pitcher in the Mountain West and it's really disappointing for his season to end this way."
The All-America candidate finishes the season with an 8-2 record to go with a 1.76 ERA. He recorded 82 strikeouts and opponents hit .209 in 2014. His 3.18 career ERA ranks fourth all-time in school history and he sports a 21-10 career record at UNLV. Fedde was named to the 2014 District VIII Capital One® Academic All-District Baseball Team and earlier this week he was named to the 30-man Midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list.
"It's unfortunate but it is just a bump in the road," Fedde said. "I look to come back stronger from it."
Typical rehabilitation for this type of injury is 12-18 months.
"Erick has a tremendous work ethic and I truly believe that he will bounce back from this," Chambers said. "He is the ultimate teammate and will be with the guys as we look to finish the year strong. His teammates and coaches will also be there to support him 100 percent."
