LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV had a total of 78 student-athletes named to the Spring 2014 Academic All-Mountain West Team, the league announced Monday.
Three Rebel programs hit double-digits this year with women's swimming and diving leading the way with 19, followed by women's track and field with 17 and softball with 11 (which tied for the second-most in the league).
UNLV men's golf tied for the league lead with six honorees while baseball also had six. UNLV women's tennis and women's basketball featured five each while men's tennis and women's golf had four apiece. Men's basketball had one honoree.
If you include the seven men's swimming and diving student-athletes who were previously announced as part of the 2014 Academic All-Western Athletic Conference Team, UNLV had a total of 85 individuals who were acknowledged for their efforts in the classroom this spring. That total marked the 10th straight year that at least 81 Rebels were recognized.
For the 2013-14 academic year, UNLV had 127 student-athletes - 117 MW and 10 WAC in two sports - earn either Fall or Spring honors. That number extends the athletic department's run to nine consecutive years with at least 124.
Overall, a league-record 897 student-athletes were named to the Spring 2014 Academic All-Mountain West Team. Spring sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track & field.
To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MW Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic team at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletics team.
