Rebels Host No. 14 UMBC Friday

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

The UNLV men's soccer team has one of the biggest home games in recent history this Friday, as they will look to remain undefeated against No. 14 UMBC in the first game of the UNLV Nike Invitational at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. There will be a special student promotion for the game, as all UNLV students with a RebelCard will receive free admission, a free BBQ sandwich courtesy of Smoke'n Sams and $1 off all beer purchases (must be 21 years of age).

The Rebels will then close out the weekend against Detroit on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm. Cal State Fullerton will be the final team in the field, facing Detroit on Friday at 4:30 pm, and UMBC on Sunday in a 4 pm contest.

Tickets are $8 for adults, while children 12 and under are always free to UNLV soccer games. A special note to all fans attending the contest, the parking lots at the soccer field are currently closed. Fans have two options for parking, the entrance off of Flamingo has now been opened and fans can park at the Boys and Girls Club and walk over. Or they can continue to park at the baseball lots and walk or ride a shuttle over to Johann Field.

All four games of the UNLV Nike Invitational will have a live video stream and Gametracker available, which can be accessed at UNLVRebels.com.

All About The Rebels
UNLV is off to its best start since 1985 at 4-0, The four-game win streak is the longest since 1998, while the last time UNLV won five in a row was when the 1987 squad had a 10-game streak. UNLV will also looking to remain as one of the 15 teams in the nation without a loss or tie. The last win for UNLV over a ranked squad was on Sept. 2, 2008, when UNLV opened the season with a 2-1 win at No. 23 Cal Poly, thanks to a golden goal from Nick Marshall.
UNLV brings in a high powered offense, led by senior forward Salvador Bernal, who leads the conference and is second in the nation with 11 points and five goals. He is one of eight Rebels that have scored at least once this year. In goal for the Rebels is Ryan Harding, the preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Scouting #14 UMBC
The Retrievers bring a No. 14 national ranking (NSCAA) and a 14-game unbeaten streak (10-0-4 dating back to 2013) into this weekend's tournament. UMBC has outscored its opponents by a 9-2 margin this season, while claiming a 0-0 double-overtime tie at top-15 Maryland.
Kay Banjo is the team's leading scorer this year with seven points off two goals and three assists. Two more players also have two goals each. In goal is Phil Breno, who has played all 380 minutes this season and has two shutouts and a 0.47 GAA.

Scouting Detroit
The Titans come into Las Vegas looking to break a two-game losing streak after being shutout by Northern Kentucky (1-0) and Dayton (3-0). That followed a season-opening win at home over Western Michigan by a 2-1 score. The two goals this year have come from Matt DeVries and Adam Clauss. In goal has been Nathan Steinwascher who has a 1.64 GAA and 14 saves thus far this season.

Next Time Out
The Rebels will be on the road at Gonzaga in a rare Saturday contest, on Sept. 20 at 1 pm in Spokane, Wash. That will be the lone game of the week.
