LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The win streak is over for the UNLV men's soccer team, but it remains undefeated after finishing in a 0-0 double-overtime tie with the defensive-minded Detroit Titans on Sunday afternoon in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The Rebels dropped to 5-0-1 for the season, while Detroit moved to 2-2-1 and claimed the tournament title after winning the total goals scored tiebreaker
UNLV got off to a slow start to the game, credited with just one shot in the opening 45 minutes against a Detroit squad that packed it in defensively the majority of the contest. The Titans were able to take advantage of the Rebels' frustrations on offense to attempt six shots in the first half. Only one was on goal, easily saved by Rebel goalkeeper
Ryan Harding. The second half saw the Rebels start to find their way on offense, taking seven shots, three on goal, while limiting the Titans to just three attempts. UNLV could not find the back of the goal though, leading to the second overtime game of the season for the Rebels. Detroit was held without a shot in both overtime periods, and the Rebels took three but again could not get past the Titan goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher, leading to the scoreless draw.
The Rebels finished with 11 total shots and four on goal.
Rodrigo Fuentes paced the way with four shots, while
Salvador Bernal took two. Harding claimed two saves in goal for UNLV, and Steinwascher had four for the Titans. UNLV finished the game with a 9-7 edge on corner kicks. The shutout streak of four is the longest for the Rebels since the 1985 season.
UNLV is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 20, with a 1 pm contest at Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
