For the first time this season UNLV lost a game after scoring the first goal of the contest, as it gave up a season-high three goals in the second half in a 3-2 setback at UMKC on Friday night in WAC men's soccer action from Durwood Stadium. The loss dropped the Rebels into fourth place in the WAC, one point behind CSU Bakersfield, as the Rebels now stand at 4-3-1 in league play and 10-5-1 overall. The Kangaroos meanwhile improved to 5-8-2, 3-4-1 in the conference.
"Tough game to lose tonight in Kansas City at an extremely critical point of conference play," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "We need to have a better team defensive effort and overall work rate to get back to our successful form on Sunday against Air Force. That game has huge implications, as now we are fighting for a spot in the postseason WAC Tournament."
On a night that saw heavy rainfall almost the entire contest, the Rebels struck first when junior Kevin Partida scored on a header off a cross from Rodrigo Fuentes in the 13th minute. That was just one of three shots for the Rebels in the first half, yet was good enough to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the half, despite seven shots from UMKC.
The turning point of the game came just over 10 minutes into the second half, as the 'Roos scored a pair of goals in a 4:19 span. First was a header by Guerrero Pino off a free kick by Derek Schrick in the 56th minute, that tied tie game at 1-1. UMKC then took its first lead of the game in the 60th minute when Wes White scored unassisted for a 2-1 advantage.
UNLV would it the score in the 70th minute. Danny Musovski posted his eighth goal in the last 10 games when he headed in a cross from Bradley Kamdem, to knot the contest at 2-2. Both teams made strong pushes to get a third score regulation to avoid overtime, and it was the host 'Roos that came up with the game-winner. For the fourth time in the game a goal was scored off a header, this time it was provided by Broc Cramer, off assists from Pandelis Popgeorgiev and Michele Drago in the 86th minute. That left the Rebels will only a few chances to find a tying score, but the one shot on goal was stopped by the UMKC goalkeeper.
UMKC finished the game with a 16-10 edge on shots, though shots on goal were even at 5-5. The 'Roos also had the advantage on corner kicks at 4-2. Richard Garness posted two saves in goal for UNLV while Ryan Tome finished with three for the home team.
The Rebels remain on the road for their next game, a Sunday, 12 pm (MT) league contest at Air Force.
