Sophomore forward Danny Musovski scored his fourth game-winner in the past five games as UNLV claimed a conference road victory on Friday afternoon, 1-0 at San Jose State in WAC men's soccer action at Spartan Soccer Field. The Rebels, who had a seven-game win streak snapped on Sunday, bounced back to improve to 8-3 overall, and 2-1 in league play with its first road win at SJSU since 2012, and first road win of the season as well. The Spartans meanwhile dropped to 3-7, 1-1 in the WAC.
"I think we had a very difficult game on the road against a strong San Jose State team," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "They (SJSU) had some great looks today, but Richard Garness was the man of the match for us. He came up big and made some critical saves. His leadership and commitment to the shutout was the key in the victory. Danny meanwhile had a great goal off a counter attack and continues to be our leader on offense."
Locked in a defensive battle for the second straight game, the Rebels went into halftime tied at 0-0. They would take a lead early into the second half though when the Rebels took control of the ball on their side of the field. Oscer Velazquez then sent a long through ball past the line of defenders. Musovski made a quick move to get separation from the backline, and was able to take on the goalie one-on-one before sending in a shot from 12 yards out for the score in the 54th minute. It was the seventh goal of the season for Musovski.
The Spartans would not go away quietly, as they would take a total of 11 shots in the second half. However, Garness stood strong in goal as he claimed a career-high eight saves, including five in the second half. The Spartans finished the game with a 17-9 edge on shots, and 8-5 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in the favor of the host team by an 8-4 margin.
UNLV will continue its road trip in California with a Sunday, 6 pm contest at CSU Bakersfield.
