LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Sophomore pitcher
D.J. Myers made a strong first impression for UNLV baseball (2-1) in a 3-0 victory over the No. 23 Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-2) on Sunday in front of 1,662 fans at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Myers (1-0) went 7.2 innings, allowing zero runs on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk on 97 pitches.
The win marked UNLV's first shut out over a ranked opponent since joining the Mountain West and was the first home shutout since last year's season opener against Central Michigan, where the Rebels blanked the Chippewas 5-0.
Freshman third baseman
Payton Squier led the way offensively for the Rebels by going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, the Rebels opened the scoring in the home half of the second inning.
Erik VanMeetren started the inning off with a walk.
Edgar Montes moved VanMeetren to third with a double to right field and then
Nick Rodriguez brought home VanMeetren on a ground out to the shortstop. Montes later scored on a Squier sacrifice fly to left field.
UNLV tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh. Rodriguez led the inning off with a triple to centerfield, and was brought home on a Squier double down the right field line.
The Rebels return to the diamond Tuesday against Grand Canyon in Phoenix at 6:05 p.m. Fans can watch the game on Cox Cable channel 382 (SD) and 1382 (HD), and it will be streamed online at www.cox7.com.
