LONG BEACH, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (12-15, 2-10 Mountain West) fought to tie its midweek game with Long Beach State (14-10), but fell 5-4 at Blair Field on Tuesday night.
The Rebels were down to their last strike in the top of the ninth inning when freshman
Payton Squier drove a ball through the right side, driving in
Parker Hokuf from second. The run tied the game at four, but the Dirtbags were able to win the game in the home half of the ninth when Zack Rivera hit a walk-off single.
UNLV took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning to open the scoring.
Edgar Montes scored on a LBSU error to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead and
Austin Anderson scored on an
Erik VanMeetren single later in the inning.
The Dirtbags got one run back in the bottom of the third, but UNLV extended its lead in the fourth when
Dylan Ellis scored on an
A.J. VanMeetren triple to right field.
LBSU answered by plating three runs in the home half of the fourth and held a 4-3 lead over the Rebels until two outs in the ninth inning.
For the third straight game, UNLV outhit its opponent, finishing with nine hits compared to the Dirtbag's six hits. The Rebels also committed half as many errors as LBSU, two compared to four.
From the plate Squier led the Rebels, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ellis also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Zack Hartman (0-1) was saddled with the loss after tossing 1.1 innings in relief. He allowed one run on one hit and walked two while striking out one.
Jack Freedman started the game for UNLV and
Cody Roper,
Matt Thomas,
Corey Wilson and
Christian Myers all made relief appearances.
