SCOUTING THE REBELS
- UNLV baseball (15-20, 2-13 Mountain West) is coming off a week where it defeated No. 5 Arizona State (7-6) and captured a series win over Ohio State (6-5 loss on Friday, 3-2 win on Saturday and 7-4 win on Sunday). The Rebels most recently fell to LMU on Tuesday, 8-7 on a suicide squeeze.
- The Rebels win over the Sun Devils was the first time team captured a victory over a top-five team since 2003, when UNLV beat No. 3 Cal State Fullerton. It was also the Rebels first win against ASU since beating them in 2002.
- With the series win over the Buckeyes, UNLV improved to 7-3 against Big Ten teams this season. If the Rebels played in the B1G, they would currently be in third in the conference standings, trailing only Illinois (8-1) and Iowa (8-1).
- UNLV's weekend series at Ohio State was the team's first road series win of the year.
- The Rebels opened the season with a series victory over No. 23 Nebraska, but dropped its series opener with the Huskers in front of a record 3,173 fans 2-0. UNLV defeated the Huskers 5-3 on Saturday and then recorded a shut out with a 3-0 win on Sunday.
- It was the first series win over a ranked team since 2014 when the Rebels swept No. 24 New Mexico. It was also the first time since the Rebels joined the Mountain West that they shut out a ranked team.
- Kenny Oakley (2-3, 2.95) is projected to start for UNLV on Friday, Ben Wright (0-1, 2.35) is slated start on Saturday and D.J. Myers (2-2, 4.19) is probable to start on Sunday.
- The Rebels' bull pen has been anchored by two of the best closers in school history: juniors Zack Hartman and Brayden Torres. Hartman currently leads the team with three saves, while Torres has two saves this season.
- Senior Joey Lauria (3-2, 3.86 ERA) owns the best strikeout-to-walk ratio on the team as he has recorded 38 punch outs against only seven walks in 32.2 innings of work.
- Senior Dylan Ellis leads the Rebels from the plate with a batting average of .405. Ellis, who has been a reserve for most of his career, has also had 11 games with multiple hits, which ranks second on the team.
- Senior Erik VanMeetren leads the team with four home runs and is hitting .277 on the year with 18 RBI.
- Reigning Mountain West Player of the Week Joey Armstrong leads the team with 15 multiple hit games and is hitting .319 on the year. Last week he led the Rebels by hitting .471 with six runs scored, four RBI, two stolen bases and a home run.
