June 19, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Garie Blando and the Philippine Blu Girls won the gold medal in softball at the recently completed 28th Southeast Asian Games in Kallang, Singapore. The Blu Girls outscored their competition 48-3 en route to a perfect 6-0 record - which included four shutouts - in the five-day event held at Kallang Softball Field.
The Philippines breezed through the preliminary round that started with a 6-0 victory over Indonesia (June 6). One day later, the squad notched a pair of seven-run decisions over Thailand (9-2) and Singapore (8-1). The Blu Girls closed out the prelims with a commanding 12-0 win against Malaysia in only three innings. That shutout of Malaysia was the first of three in a row and it preceded a 10-0 triumph in four innings in the semifinals versus Singapore (June 9) and a 3-0 decision in the final against Thailand (June 10).
The Southeast Asian Games is the second foray into international softball for Blando, who suited up for the Philippines last summer at the World Cup of Softball IX (Irvine, Calif.) and Asian Games (Incheon, South Korea). She was the lone Filipino-American to play for the Blu Girls in Singapore this year.
The rising senior from Chino Hills, Calif., was tabbed - in May - to the Mountain West's All-Conference First Team as well as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's All-West Region Third Team. Blando, who started all 55 contests for UNLV in 2015, led the Rebels in nearly every offensive category, such as: batting average (.389), at-bats (180), runs (55), hits (70), doubles (16), home runs (15), RBI (46), total bases (133) and slugging percentage (.739). She was also tops in multiple-hit games (18) and multiple-RBI games (15).
