Musovski Named WAC Preseason Player Of The Year, Rebels Picked Second

Aug. 18, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV, defending regular season and tournament champion, was once again predicted to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference as the league office released the men's soccer preseason poll on Tuesday. In addition, three Rebels were named to the preseason All-WAC squad, while sophomore forward Danny Musovski is the 2015 preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

This is the second straight year the Rebels have been picked second in the WAC preseason predictions. They would go on to win the league last yaer with a 7-2-1 mark, and finished overall at 15-4-2 while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. The Rebels did lose five starters however, including four all-region selections, highlighted by All-American and WAC Offensive Player of the Year Salvador Bernal, a draft choice in the 2015 MLS draft by Toronto FC.

Seattle is this year's favorite, with five first place votes for 92 overall. UNLV also had five first place votes, and placed second in the poll with 86 points. CSU Bakersfield was close behind in third with 80 points and the last first place vote. Utah Valley placed fourth with 71 points, and San Jose State was picked fifth with 66.

Rounding out the poll, Incarnate Word and UMKC tied for sixth (48), Grand Canyon was two points behind in eighth (46), Air Force was ninth (36), Houston Baptist 10th (19), and first-year program UTRGV 11th with 13 points.

UNLV and Seattle each had three players on the preseason all-conference team, while CSU Bakersfield and San Jose State had two players on the squad. The final school represented was Utah Valley with one player. Leading the all-conference nods for the Rebels is sophomore Danny Musovski, the second-leading scorer on last year's team as a freshman with six goals and six assists for 18 points. The Las Vegas native was also named the WAC Tournament MVP after leading the Rebels to the title. Fuentes, a senior midfielder and Las Vegas native as well, was a first-team all-region selection in 2014 after scoring five goals and posting 12 points and was named this month to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List earlier this month. UNLV's final all-conference member is senior defender Jason Khamvongsa. He started in 21 of 22 games on the backline while helping the Rebels allow only 1.17 GAA and just 9.4 total shots per game. He also ranked sixth on the team in scoring with nine points off three goals and three points.

UNLV opens the season on the road for the third straight year, beginning with a Friday, Aug. 28 contest at Cal Poly that starts at 7 pm. That will be followed by a Sunday, Aug. 30 game at Loyola Marymount with a 1 pm start.

The final exhibition game of the preseason will be on Saturday at 7 pm, against Cal-Baptist. The game will be played at Johann Memorial Field, and admission is free for that contest.
