The Rebels hope to open this season the way it did a year ago with two straight wins away from Las Vegas on the opening weekend. Friday will mark the third time in the last seven years the Rebels will start the regular season on the road at Cal Poly, after an overtime upset at the 23rd ranked Mustangs in 2009 and a 1-0 loss to being the 2011 campaign. UNLV's game against LMU makrs the first time it has faced the Lions since a 1-1 overtime tie at the start of the 2012 season.
Though the Rebels graduated five starters from last year's conference championship squad, they are again one of the favorites in the WAC this season thanks to a strong core of returning players, highlighted by MAC Hermann Watch List candidate Rodrigo Fuentes, a senior midfield, while sophomore forward Danny Musovski has been named the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Both players were named preseason all-conference, along with senior defender Jason Khamvongsa.
