Shorthanded Rebels Handed 2-0 Loss At Loyola Marymount

Aug. 30, 2015

LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV gave Loyola Marymount a battle for the entire game, but eventually wore down after having to play shorthanded from the 33-minute mark and would fall to the Lions by a 2-0 score in men's college soccer action Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

It marked the second straight road loss for the Rebels to open the season, despite again finishing the game with more overall shots. That was even more impressive on Sunday as the Rebels were able to put together several strong scoring opportunities during the game after having to play down a man after Bradley Kamdem was sent off with his second yellow card in the 33rd minute. Despite the obvious advantage in playing with a man up for the final 57 minutes, the Lions (2-0) were able to come out on top mostly due to the play of their Paul Blanchette. The Lions' goalkeeper was able to make several impressive last second saves on at least three Rebel shots that were destined for the back of the net.

UNLV kept the pressure on the Lions for the majority of the first half, with a 5-3 shot advantage while forcing LMU to make three saves. However, playing shorthanded eventually caught up to the Rebels. The Lions broke the scoreless draw in the 55th minute thanks to a header on the far post by Grant Sampson, off a double-assist from Matt Gooden and Alvaro Madrigal. UNLV nearly tied the score just 12 seconds later on a quick start from midfield following the score, but Corey Ackley's shot would go high over the goal.

UNLV did not let up on attack in the second half, as both teams would take six shots in the second stanza. The second goal of the game again come from Sampson on a header on the far post. His second score, in the 83rd minute, was assisted on by Madrigal and Adrien Perez.

"We held them in the first half to no goals," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "But unfortunately they were unable to wear us down in the second half off goals to the far post, basically due to an extra player. We did everything we needed to today at the start, but then when you have to play down a man for two-thirds of the game you have to change your game plan."

The Rebels finished the day with a 13-11 edge on shots, 5-4 on shots on goal, and took five corner kicks to two for the Lions. Richard Garness finished with one save in net for the Rebels, while UNLV was officially credited with one team save that stopped a certain goal in the first half. Blanchette posted five saves for the shutout for LMU.
