UNLV scored the game's first goal, but couldn't stop a determined Seattle squad on its Senior Night, as the Rebels were handed a 4-1 road loss on Thursday night in WAC men's soccer action from Championship Field. Though UNLV dropped to 4-3-1 in league play, it trails Air Force by just two points for third place, and more importantly clinched a spot in the WAC tournament with 13 points in the conference standings. The Redhawks meanwhile remained undefeated in league play at 7-0-2.
"Seattle has proven why they are the best in the WAC," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "They have a lot of maturity and were very active in attacking. We gave up a lot of goals, bu the goals we gave up were good goals by them, they are a legitimate team. We came out strong at the start but it wasn't enough to sustain us for the whole game."
On a rainy night in the Northwest city, the Rebels took an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. After a ball was sent into the box, a scramble for possession led to several touches a couple of shots before Pitt was able to find a hole and kick in a shot from short range. It was Pitt's fourth goal of the year, while Spencer Jackson was credited with an assist.
Seattle tied up the game in the 18th minute on a shot by Sergio Rivas, and then went up 2-1 just before halftime on a header by Alex Roldan off Sam Langson's cross. The Redhawks took the 2-1 lead into halftime after holding an 11-3 edge on shots.
It was much of the same story in the second half, with SU attempting eight of the 11 total shots. The lead stretched to 3-1 in the 52nd minute thanks to a goal by Nathan Aune, while Julio Rubio closed out the scoring in the 88th minute.
UNLV's Danny Musovski had entered the game ranked first in the nation in shots on goal per game, but was held without a single shot, as the Seattle defense allowed just six total shots in the game from the visiting Rebel squad. Jordan Hadden collected three saves for SU, while Enrique Adame made seven stops for UNLV, while Richard Garness playing the final five minutes and coming up with a solo save.
The Rebels will look to spoil Utah Valley's Senior Night when they take on the 21st-ranked Wolverines on Saturday night at 6 pm (PT) in Orem, Utah. That will be the final road game of the regular season, before UNLV returns home for its regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 pm against UMKC.
