Greg Maddux Set To Throw First Pitch

Oct. 28, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volunteer assistant coach and Baseball Hall of Famer Greg Maddux will return to Wrigley Field to throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Chicago Cubs host the Cleveland Indians in game four of the World Series Saturday night (5:00 pm PT).

Maddux, a native of Las Vegas and graduate of Valley High School, was drafted by the Cubs in the second round of the 1984 MLB Draft. He made his debut on Sept. 2, 1986, and spent nine full seasons (1986-92 and 2004-05) and part of another (2006) with the North Side ball club. Overall, he won 133 games for the Cubs.

In all, Maddux pitched 23 seasons in the Major Leagues with four different organizations (Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres). During his career, he won 355 games and struck out 3,371 batters. He is the only pitcher to record 300-plus wins, 3,000-plus strikeouts and issue fewer than 1,000 walks. He was a four-time recipient of the Cy Young Award (1992-95) and was bestowed 18 Gold Glove Awards. He earned eight trips to the All-Star Game, too. He was inducted into Hall of Fame in 2014.

Earlier this month, Maddux and former Atlanta teammates Tom Glavine and John Smoltz threw out the final "first pitch" on October 2, prior to the Braves final game - against Detroit - at Turner Field.
