Late Goal Sends Rebels To 2-1 Road Loss

Oct. 8, 2016

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - In a tightly contested battle Saturday morning, the difference in the game was a 25-yard blast by Incarnate Word in the 81st minute that sent UNLV to a 2-1 loss on the road in WAC men's soccer action from Benson Field. With their second straight one-goal road loss, the Rebels drop to 2-2 in league play, and 4-9 overall on the year. UIW meanwhile improved to 1-1-1 in the WAC, 3-5-2 for the season.

"Tough trip to Texas," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "I thought we came out getting the early goal, converting a corner kick and then had another great chance right after halftime. But we are still struggling to defend as a team and earn shutouts. Defense wins championships, so we hope we can get to the conference tournament and have a great weekend when we get there."

UNLV notched the first goal of the game off a set play in the first half. Timo Mehlich sent a corner kick into the box where defender Adam Musovski finished off the play for the score. It was the first of his career, and put UNLV up 1-0.

UIW would come back to knot the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute of a header by Ryan Osborne from 12 yards out that went over the head of goalkeeper Enrique Adame. O'Neal Moore assisted on the score. The game would go into halftime still tied at 1-1, and both teams took five shots each in that opening half.

The Rebels had a push on offense to start the second half, with three shots from inside the box including one that hit the crossbar. They could not get a second score in however, and the game was decided in the 81st minute on a long blast by Ronan Fournier that found the far post. Ben Conway was credited with an assist on the winning score.

The Cardinals finished with an 11-10 edge on shots, and 6-4 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in favor of the home team at 3-2.

UNLV is back in action on Friday, Oct. 14 when it hosts Grand Canyon at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. There will be a tailgate with free food and drinks before the game, while it will also feature live music thanks to Little Dragons, who will start playing at 5 pm.
