Rebel Baseball Adds Nine For 2018

Nov. 22, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball program has received signed national letters of intent from nine student-athletes - Cade Adams, Bryce Bullock, Zack Gillissie, Trevor Horn, Dillon Johnson, Donavon McCrystal, Jacob Rogers, Jack Wold and Conner Woods - who will enroll at the University and be eligible to play for the Rebels during the 2018 season, head coach Stan Stolte announced.

The signing class is comprised of six high school student-athletes - Adams, Bullock, Gillissie, Rogers, Wold and Woods - who will graduate in 2017 and three junior-college transfers - Horn, Johnson and McCrystal - from two-year institutions. In all, five signees hail from the Las Vegas Valley while Arizona and California have two representatives apiece.

"Even though each class is of the utmost importance, it was critical that we put a class together this signing period that will put us in a position to win nationally again and I'm very confident we accomplished that," noted Stolte. "Coach Kevin Higgins and Pat Armstrong put in tireless hours and it looks like it paid off. You never know until you know, but I'm extremely happy with the quality of each of these student-athletes both on and off the field. I'm very encouraged about the positive response we are getting from the local players which we have to get to be successful."

Adams is a local product from Desert Oasis High School who has helped the team amass 61 combined wins during the past three seasons (2014-16). In his sophomore campaign, the 6'4" right-handed pitcher helped the Diamondbacks to a 26-9 overall mark en route to a conference title. In 2015, he earned All-Northwest Honorable Mention accolades.

"Cade is bouncing back from Tommy John surgery and will be full-go for us when he steps on campus. He could be a big surprise for us; he was well on his way to being a very good pitcher before getting injured."

Bullock, a 6'2" infielder and pitcher from Spring Valley High School, has guided the Grizzlies to a combined 39-13 overall record the past two seasons en route to a second-place showing in the 2015 district playoffs and a third-place finish one year later. The team's 21 wins during the 2016 campaign were a school record. Individually, he hit .490 in '16 with 50 hits - 26 of which went for extra bases, and 43 RBI. He was named to the all-state second team and was an All-Southern Nevada DI First Team selection.

"Bryce is just an all-around hard-nosed baseball player who can fill many roles. He grew up wanting to be a rebel and we are excited he's getting that chance."

Gillissie is 6'1" and hails from Corona, California. He is a right-handed pitcher that also plays the outfield. In 2016, he helped the Corona Panthers to a 24-10 mark and a second-place finish in Big VIII play. The team ranked first overall in the state in both offense and defense. As a junior, he earned all-league first team honors with a .347 batting average backed by 31 hits - 17 of which went for extra bases, 34 runs and 24 RBI.

"Zack is a very talented baseball player from Southern California. He's capable of playing early in his collegiate career with the possibility of pitching also. He's a very good hitter that plays hard."

Horn, a 6'1" right-handed pitcher, will transfer to UNLV after completing his sophomore season at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Scottsdale native initially attended Arizona State during the 2014-15 school year after graduating from Horizon High School in '14. After completing a redshirt season at ASU, he transferred to SCC and played for the Fighting Artichokes and earned All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and DII All-Region Second Team honors. As a redshirt freshman, he made 15 appearances with 10 starts and five relief appearances that resulted in a 2.41 ERA, four wins and one save in 71.0 innings of work. In high school, his 2014 Huskies squad earned top-25 recognition from Max Preps while he was an all-state performer who claimed Big League Dugout National Tournament MVP honors and the Majestic National Tournament Best Pitcher Award to couple with All-Tournament Team status.

"Trevor is a guy we think can step right in and pitch on weekends for us. He has a very good arm and is really developing at SCC. We think he will make a quick impact for us."

Johnson is a 6'0" infielder that graduated from Silverado High School in 2015 and currently attends the College of Southern Nevada. As a freshman second baseman, he was a Region 18 Second Team performer who helped the Coyotes to a 40-15 overall record. He scattered 55 hits - 14 of which went for extra bases - for a .353 batting average with 43 runs and 33 RBI. At SHS, he was All-Sunrise, All-Southern Nevada and all-state first team selection.

"Dillon is one of my favorite guys to have watched play during the recruiting process. You always left the park saying he played the game harder than anyone else on the field, and most of the time, better too. He will be a great addition immediately."

McCrystal graduated from West Hills High School in 2015 and will transfer to UNLV after his sophomore season at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. The 6'1" right-handed pitcher went 10-1 as a freshman with a 2.52 ERA in 15 appearances (all starts) and 82.0 innings of work and, in turn, earned All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference First Team honors. His team went 31-12 overall and advanced to Super Regional play after it claimed a PCAC title with a 19-5 mark. In high school, he played two years of baseball and was an all-state second-teamer in one season of water polo.

"We look forward to getting Donavon on campus. We really enjoy the current Grossmont pitchers (Alan Strong and Andrew Schultz) we currently have and we think he can contribute at the same level that they are."

Rogers is a 6'3" infielder that will graduate from Liberty High School in the spring. In two years of play with the Patriots, he has helped the team to 42 combined wins and a Northeast Conference title in 2015. As a junior, he led the team in doubles and triples and tied for the top spot in home runs en route to All-Sunrise Region recognition. He has also suited up for Liberty's soccer team as a goalie.

"Jacob is another kid that grew up wanting to be a Rebel. His best days are ahead of him even though he already is pretty good. He is a great student and a great kid who will be an asset to us in the next few years."

Wold is a 5'10" first baseman and outfielder that will graduate from Basic Academy in the spring. He helped the Wolves claim back-to-back Southeast League titles in 2014 and '15 before the team ran the gauntlet in 2016 and won championships at the Sunrise League, Sunrise Region and state levels. Overall, the team has won 81 percent (89-21) of its games the past three seasons. As a junior, he was an all-state and All-Southern Nevada First team selection. One year earlier, he earned All-Southern Nevada Second Team recognition. He's been an all-league performer all three seasons.

"Jack is arguably the best high school hitter in the state. We love the way he goes about the game. He's an old-school guy who plays the game the right way."

Woods is a 6'0" right-handed pitcher that also plays catcher and in the infield. He attends Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona, where the Padres have had back-to-back winning seasons and won a combined 28 games. During his junior year, he coupled a 2.39 ERA with a .436 batting average, and garnered all-section first team and Tempe All-City honors. As a sophomore, he was an all-section honorable mention.

"Conner is probably the sleeper of the class. He will pitch significant innings for us as a freshman. He has great makeup and can really pitch. He is tough and may also be a two-way guy."
