Wheatley Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

Nov. 30, 2016
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Basketball junior Nikki Wheatley has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

The shooting guard from La Verne, Calif., averaged 12.5 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block while shooting 50% from the floor and 11-of-18 from the free throw line in wins over Tennessee State and Ole Miss at the Lady Rebel Round-Up last weekend. Wheatley was named the tournament's MVP after helping the Rebels stay undefeated on the season and capture their first title in their home tournament since 2005. In Saturday's win over Tennessee State, Wheatley scored 11 points in just 19 minutes of action in the eventual 22-point win. The junior followed that performance by posting team-highs of 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as the Lady Rebels won their first game against an SEC opponent since Nov. 2004 with a 64-57 victory over Ole Miss in the tournament championship game. Logging 31 minutes in that game, Wheatley was key during UNLV's third quarter comeback, coming up with four rebounds, two assists, two free throws and a block while helping hold Ole Miss without a point in the final 4:31 of the quarter.

Next up for the Lady Rebels is the Maui Wahine Classic in Maui, Hawaii, where they will face BYU on Friday, December 2 and Idaho on Saturday, December 3 as they look to extend their unbeaten streak to seven to start the 2016-17 campaign.
