Wheatley Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Basketball guard Nikki Wheatley has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time in three weeks the junior has earned the nod.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Wheatley, a La Verne, Calif. native, posted her first double-double of the season as the Lady Rebels took down Pepperdine on the road 68-61 to pick up their seventh win of the season. The guard finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, with her most pivotal plays coming just after the Waves took their first lead of the game with just over three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. On the next play, the junior hit her second three pointer of the season to help UNLV regain the lead with 2:39 left, then stole the ball on Pepperdine's next possession and sunk the fast break layup to make it 61-58. The sequence was the start of an eventual 11-0 run that helped the Lady Rebels put the game away. On the night, Wheatley shot 50% from the floor (5-of-9), including 4-of-5 from inside the arc, while adding four assists, three steels and one block.

UNLV moved to 8-1 with a 62-46 win at UC Irvine on Monday. The Lady Rebels will return to action on Monday, Dec. 19 when they will take on Oregon State at 8 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena as part of the Play4Kay Shootout Tournament Dec. 19-21.
