LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Just a few days after helping UNLV Volleyball to its first win in NCAA postseason competition, senior Bree Hammel was named All-Pacific South Region Honorable Mention for the second time in her career by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Hammel becomes the second Scarlet & Gray student-athlete to garner all-region status twice as she joins Lauren Miramontes who did so in 2005 (honorable mention) and 2007 (first team). In all, the program has had three recognized by the AVCA with Camille Cunningham tabbed an honorable mention in 2008.
"It's good to see Bree honored again as an honorable mention all-region player," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "This is one of the most competitive regions, so the honor is a very special recognition of Bree's season. It's also an honor for our team and program as well as a reflection of the hard work Bree and her teammates put in this year."
Hammel, a senior out of Bonanza High School, led the Rebels in kills (453), kills per set (3.87), aces (40) and aces per set (0.34). She also registered 286 digs as well as 101 total blocks with nine of those listed as solo efforts. She also compiled 10 double-doubles (all kill-dig combinations) with help from double digits in both kills and digs in 26 and 12 contests, respectively. Included in those aforementioned figures are career- and season-highs of 23 kills (twice: vs. Boise State/September 22 and at Colorado State/November 3) and 23 digs (vs. UT Arlington/September 9).
Prior to UNLV's 1-1 showing at the 2016 NCAA Tournament, Hammel ranked within the top 100 of seven national statistical categories. She was listed as high as 39th in points per set (4.65) and also sat 41st in assists per set (10.75), 47th in points (512.0), 63rd in service aces, 71st in aces per set, 74th in total digs (423) and 89th in attacks per set (10.25).
For her career, she was selected three times to the Mountain West's All-Conference Team and was also a three-time MW Player of the Week honoree.
She closed out her four-year run with her name listed numerous times in the program's career record book. She ranks as high as second in assisted blocks (344) and also comes in third in total blocks (394), fourth in kills (1,097) and seventh in both solo blocks (50) and attack attempts (2,636). In UNLV's single-season record book, she sits second in total blocks (174/2014) and assisted blocks (149/2014), third in kills (453/2016) and total attempts (1,199/2016), and sixth in aces (40).
