FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (8-9 overall, 3-2 Mountain West) suffered a 6-2 loss to the Fresno State Bulldogs (12-7, 3-3) at Pete Beiden Field Saturday night. The Bulldogs broke a 1-all tie with two runs in the home half of the second inning and scored three more in the fifth to distance themselves from the Rebels.
FS got the scoring started early off an RBI double by Brody Russell in the bottom of the first. Zach Ashford scored from second on Russell's two-base hit after he has initially led off with a five-pitch walk.
UNLV evened the score at 1-all in the second off a two-out, run-scoring single down the right-field line by Nick Rodriguez. Justin Jones got the inning started when he reached on a wild pitch after striking out and then moved into scoring position when Andrew Yazdanbakhsh was walked. Rodriguez's hit came after a strikeout and just before the Rebels loaded the bases on a walk issued to Cody Howard. Unfortunately, FS's Jimmy Lambert (4-0) got out of the jam with his fourth strikeout of the frame.
The 'dogs pushed ahead for good in the bottom of the second when they got run-scoring hits from Jeremiah Burks and Jake Stone after a two-out throwing error kept the inning alive.
The home side pushed three across off of four hits in the fifth. Stone led off with a solo home run to right. Aaron Arruda kept things going with a one-out double and later scored on an RBI single by Joe Prior, who later touched home off a wild pitch.
The Rebels scored their second and final run of the game off a single up the middle by Austin Anderson. Cody Howard initially reached on a one-out double and scored on Anderson's two-out hit.
"Their guy (Lambert) rebounded from a slow start whereas we didn't," said head coach Stan Stolte. "He threw 39 pitches in the second inning and still threw a full six innings. We lost our poise a little, too. A couple of calls didn't go our way and we got involved with the opponent's players; which can't happen. We aren't good enough to focus on other things than ourselves. Our intensity was good, we just need to bring that to the field again tomorrow and win a tough road series."
Lambert picked up his fourth win for the Bulldogs in six innings of work. He struck out nine and allowed one run off of one hit and two walks. He handed the ball off to teammate Brennon Williams, who notched his first save in three innings of relief. Williams allowed one unearned run off of three hits with one strikeout and one walk.
UNLV's Dean Kremer (0-3) was tagged with the loss. Kremer went five innings and surrendered six runs off of nine hits. He struck out three and walked one. Cody Roper tossed the final three innings for the Rebels and fanned four against two hits and one walk.
Sunday's series finale is set to begin at 1:05 pm and it will see Kenny Oakley (2-2, 3.52 ERA) take the mound against the 'dogs.
NOTES: Squier extended his reached-base streak to 15 games with a third-inning single … Squier has collected a hit in 15 of UNLV's 17 games this season.
