LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (8-13, 3-5 Mountain West) wound up on the wrong side of the ledger Friday night in its 11-inning affair with the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (9-12, 3-4 MW) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels rallied from a four-run deficit in the ninth to force extra innings, but watched the visitors from the northern portion of the Silver State score the game-winning run two frames later in the 6-5 affair.

Friday's loss is the fourth straight that the Scarlet & Gray has been a part of that has seen its opponent score the winning run in the final stanza of play. Unfortunately, the last three defeats have taken place at home this week, including Thursday's 7-5 decision to the Wolf Pack.

UNLV and UNR close out their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 2:05 pm. The Rebels will send Kenny Oakley (2-2, 3.54 ERA) to the mound against the Pack's Trenton Brooks (1-3, 6.75 ERA) in a contest that counts towards the standings in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.

After a scoreless start to extra innings, the Wolf Pack was able to scatter a pair of singles and lay down a sacrifice bunt in the 11th for the go-ahead tally. Brooks led off the frame with a single to center off of Rebel reliever Corey Wilson (0-2) and then took second off a sacrifice bunt by T.J. Friedl. Brooks came around to score when Bryce Greager laced an RBI single to center for the would-be game-winner.

The Rebels extended the game to extras with their four-run, five-hit at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Isbel and Austin Anderson got the rally started with a single and a walk, respectively, to chase UNR starter Trevor Charpie. Two batters later, Corey Pool joined the duo on the base paths with a one-out single of reliever Evan McMahan, who got the second batter he faced to fly out. With two out and the bases juiced, Andrew Yazdanbakhsh drilled an opposite-field RBI single to right for the first tally of the comeback attempt. A.J. VanMeetren kept the momentum going with a two-run double to right field that pulled the Rebels within one at 5-4. Nick Rodriguez stepped up with runners in scoring position and legged out a ball that he hit deep in the hole at short for the game-tying RBI single. UNR went back to the bullpen and brought in Ty Pennington (1-0), who forced UNLV to leave the possible winning run at third base with a fly out that ended the inning.

UNR slowly built its lead to four with single tallies in the first and fifth before it score twice in the seventh and once more in the eighth. Brooks got the scoring started in the first when he led off the game reaching on a throwing error. He came around and scored on a double by teammate Miles Mastrobuoni. After UNLV evened the score at 1-all in the second, the Wolf Pack pushed back ahead off an RBI single by Friedl in the fifth. The lead grew to three at 4-1 when Justin Bridgman and Brooks notched RBI off a fielder's choice and sac fly, respectively. Greager upped the cushion to four, 5-1, with an RBI single in the ninth.

"I thought there were a couple plays that we didn't make in the late innings when they (UNR) increased their lead to 5-1 were the difference," said Rebel head coach Stan Stolte. "I tip my hat to their starting pitcher (Charpie); he just challenged us with fastballs and we looked overmatched at times."

UNLV's offense had been held in-check save for the second-inning run before the ninth. Charpie faced the minimum three batters in seven of his first eight innings of work. In the second, the home team scored its run off an RBI single by Rodriguez that knocked Yazdanbakhsh in from second base.

Pennington was credited with the win, his first of the season, after he threw 1.2 innings of two-hit relief. He gave way to teammate Anthony Maritine in the 11th for a one-pitch save, his first of the year. Their starter, Charpie, went eight innings and struck out four, but was touched for three runs off of four hits and two walks.

Wilson was tagged with the loss after he surrendered the game-winning run in the 11th. The righty was only able to retire two of the four batters he faced, one of which was via strikeout.

Cody Roper got the start for UNLV and lasted five innings and only allowed two runs (one earned) off of six hits. Roper struck out a season-high four against one walk in his second start of the season.

Dean Kremer also threw five innings for the Rebels, and the newcomer gave up three runs (two earned) off of seven hits. Kremer also struck out four and walked one.

NOTES: UNLV dropped to 7-5 in games decided by two runs or less with four of those losses occurring in the past six days … UNLV's record in one-run games sits at 4-3 … Squier's 18-game reached-base streak as well as his seven-game hitting streak came to an end Friday night with his 0-for-5 outing … Squier has still reached base safely in 18 of UNLV's 21 games and has collected a hit in 18 of the 21.
