ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) â€" The UNLV baseball team (9-16, 3-7) suffered a 15-3 loss to the New Mexico Lobos (18-8, 7-3 MW) at Santa Ana Star Field Friday night. The Rebels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after their first at-bat; however, the host Lobos answered back with a run in their half of the first and four more in the second to stake themselves to an insurmountable lead. UNM was able to produce 10 more runs between the fifth and eighth before UNLV capped things off with two scores of its own in the ninth in its first of four games in the American Southwest.
The Scarlet & Gray scattered 10 hits with three multiple-hit affairs from Payton Squier, Andrew Yazdanbakhsh and Cooper Esmay, as all three had two apiece. Squier, Yazdanbakhsh and Austin Anderson scored the Rebel runs, while Pool and Esmay were credited with RBI.
Anderson, Squier and Pool got the game started in UNLV's favor when the trio produced three consecutive one-out hits in the first inning. Anderson began the offensive with a double before he moved to third off a single by Squier. With runners on the corners, Pool shot a single through the right side to produce the game's first tally.
In the home half of the first, UNM used a combination of a double and a single to draw even at 1-all. Moments after their leadoff batter was thrown out attempting to steal second base, the Lobos got a double from Jared Holley and an RBI single from Chris DeVito.
After seeing UNLV leave a runner in the top of the second, UNM made good on its opportunity with runners on base in the bottom of the frame. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Gonzalez, who knocked on in and kept the bases juiced with an infield single. Holley and DeVito followed with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly, respectively, to up the Cherry & Silver's lead to four runs at 5-1.
The Lobos lead ballooned to nine runs when they scored five times off of three runs. With two on and two out, Erick Migueles kept the stanza alive with an RBI single before Austin Bell and Gonzalez brought home two apiece off extra-base hits.
Gonzalez and Holley knocked in four RBI apiece with the former going 4-for-6 at the plate to the latter's 3-for-5 effort. Bell and Dalton Bowers touched home plate a team-best three times.
UNM added five more runs to its half of the scoreboard between the seventh and eighth innings, while UNLV struck for two in the ninth. Squier led off with a single and found himself at third base after a single by Yazdanbakhsh had a fielding error tacked onto it. Squier scored with ease from third and Yazdanbakhsh advanced to third when Lobo reliever Fernando Fernandez uncorked a wild pitch. Esmay then plated Yazdanbakhsh with a single through the left side.
"They just put us away with two-out hits," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We couldn't get off of the field in their three big innings. They are such a sound hitting team that there isn't much margin for error, and we weren't up to the challenge."
Carson Schneider improved to 5-1 on the year, as he threw eight strong innings for the Lobos. Schneider allowed one run off of seven hits. He gave way to Fernandez, who allowed two runs off of two hits in the ninth.
D.J. Myers was tagged with the loss for UNLV, and dropped to 2-1 on the year. Myers struck out two, but surrendered nine runs (eight earned) off of 10 hits and three walks.
The Rebel bullpen didn't fare well following Myers' stint on the mound, as three pitchers â€" Chase Maddux, Blaze Bohall and Christian Myers â€" combined to give up six runs off of eight hits. The trio struck out three and walked three, too.
The Rebels and Lobos return to Santa Ana Star Field Saturday for a contest set to begin at 2:00 pm MT (1:00 pm PT). UNLV will send Cody Roper (0-0, 2.45 ERA) up against UNM's Tyler Stevens (3-2, 5.09 ERA).
