SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (12-20), which led by as much as four runs, allowed 11 unanswered to the San Diego Toreros (18-17) in Monday's 13-7 loss at Fowler Park. The Rebels staked themselves to a 6-2 lead through 3.5 innings only to see the host Toreros score five in their half of the fourth and six more over the next three frames to put plenty of distance between the two squads.
The Scarlet & Gray was paced by Payton Squier and his three RBI and two runs scored. Squier's lone hit of the game was a third-inning, solo home run â€" the first of his career. His other two RBI came off a fielder's choice in the fourth and a groundout in the eight. He scored his first run of the game in the first, while his second touching of home plate was a result of his homer.
Kyle Isbel and Austin Anderson registered multiple-hit games, as each scattered two hits. Like Squier, Isbel and Cody Howard scored a pair of runs. Justin Jones notched two RBI, both of which were off groundouts.
UNLV jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first with help from one hit and two USD errors. Isbel led off with a walk and moseyed down to second when Squier reached on a catcher's interference. With one out, Andrew Yazdanbakhsh singled through the left side to bring home Isbel; Squier advanced to third after left fielder Connor Jauch misplayed the ball. Jones then grounded out to second to plate Squier.
Anderson and Nick Ames got the second inning started quickly with a single and a double, respectively. Howard stepped up and hit a grounder to short to allow Anderson to score.
USD shaved two runs off of its deficit in the bottom of the second when it got an RBI double from Alex Gomez and a sacrifice fly from Jeff Houghtby. The runs signaled an end to Corey Wilson's day on the mound for UNLV and brought Larry Quaney (1-1) into the contest. Quaney got out of the inning with a groundout.
The Rebels added three runs to their half of the scoreboard between the third and fourth stanzas. Squier was responsible for the first two, as he had the solo shot in the third and a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the fourth. Jones was credited with the third RBI â€" second of the fourth â€" with a groundout two batters later.
Things turned for the worse in the fourth when USD put runners in scoring position with one out and got assistance from a Rebel fielding error. Both runners scored on the play. With one on, Houghtby singled through the right side to put two on. Quaney was able to get the next batter out, but the third had to wait, as Riley Adams kept the inning alive with a three-run homer. The big hit handed the Toreros a one-run lead at 7-6.
"The fourth inning was the difference in the game," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We left some runs on the table, offensively, and we gave them four outs and left a slider up to a very good hitter. We're obviously struggling to get guys to throw up some zeros out of the pen. Offensively, we had some great at-bats early."
USD built on its lead with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Gomez had two of the six RBI in this span, while four others had one each.
After being held scoreless for three innings, UNLV was able to score once in the eighth. Howard and Isbel led off with back-to-back singles before moving to third off a groundout by Max Smith. Squier followed the out with an RBI groundout.
The Rebels were able to get their leadoff batter on in all but two frames â€" fifth and ninth. The good inning-by-inning starts helped them score in five of those stanzas, but they also left 11 runners on base â€" nine of which were in scoring position, six alone at third base.
For the game, USD had three players â€" Houghtby, Adams and Gomez â€" register three hits. Gomez led the squad with four RBI, while Adams and Houghtby had three and two, respectively. Daniel Gardner scored a team-best three runs, as Gomez, Adams and Jay Schuyler scored twice.
USD reliever Paul Richan (1-1) earned the win in 3.2 scoreless innings of work. Richan struck out four against two hits.
Quaney was tagged with the loss in 2.1 frames of relief. He allowed five runs (two earned) off of four hits.
