Myers Tabbed MW's Pitcher of the Week

April 18, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball's D.J. Myers was tabbed the Mountain West's Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 17. The Conference also recognized New Mexico's Carl Stajduhar as its Player of the Week.

Myers pitched eight scoreless innings and earned a share of a combined shutout in UNLV's 1-0 victory over the Air Force Falcons on April 15. The contest turned into a pitchers' duel, as his nemesis Griffin Jax allowed only one run in eight innings of work. Myers struck out six against four hits â€" all singles â€" and one walk.

The right-hander from nearby Henderson, did not allow a base runner to advance past second in the affair. More impressively, he had to overcome his defense committing five errors. He managed to induce a pair of double plays to erase two of those that reached safely off the miscues.

Myers' win not only stopped a three-game losing streak the team carried into the weekend series, but it kick started a three-game winning streak, as the Rebels swept the Air Force series with scores of 7-2 and 7-6 in games two and three, respectively.

This weekly recognition is the first for Myers during his career as a Rebel, and he is the first to earn pitching honors since his teammate Kenny Oakley did so last year on March 9.

UNLV hits the road for the remainder of the month with an eight-game trip that begins Tuesday evening (6:30 pm) against the Arizona State Sun Devils at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. That single game will be followed by a three-game, non-conference series at Cal State Fullerton that begins Friday.
