April 19, 2016 2016 UNLV Baseball Weekly Notes: Week 10
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels will pack their things and head back out of town for their second, eight-game road trip in the month of April this week. UNLV begins this trek with a non-conference game against the Arizona State Sun Devils in Phoenix Tuesday evening (6:30 pm) at Municipal Stadium. The Rebels will then mosey to Southern California for four more non-conference affairs against the Cal State Fullerton Titans at Goodwin Field (Friday-Sunday) and the UC Irvine Anteaters at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark (Monday).
The Scarlet & Gray enter the week winners of three straight after its sweep of the Air Force Falcons at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. UNLV won the first two contests, 1-0 and 7-2, before it needed to rally and force extra innings in Sunday's 7-6, 10-inning triumph. This brief homestand came right after the squad had concluded the month's first eight-game stretch.
ASU enters the week after it took two of three at home against the then-No. 15 California Golden Bears. The Sun Devils won games one and three by 6-4 and 4-0 scores, respectively, but dropped the middle affair, 8-4, in 11 innings. They've only managed to win seven of their past 17 contests after starting the year with a 13-3 mark.
TUNE IN, WATCH & LISTEN: The UNLV Rebels will have their Tuesday night game at Arizona State streamed live through the Pac-12.com, while NBC Sports Radio AM 1060 will broadcast the game. Links to both the stream and radio as well as live stats can be found at UNLVRebels.com.
ON DECK: The UNLV Rebels will head back to California for a three-game, Mountain West series (April 29-May 1) against the San Jose State Spartans.
MYERS TABBED MW'S PITCHER OF THE WEEK: UNLV's D.J. Myers was tabbed the Mountain West's Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 17. The Conference also recognized New Mexico's Carl Stajduhar as its Player of the Week.
Myers pitched eight scoreless innings and earned a share of a combined shutout in UNLV's 1-0 victory over the Air Force Falcons on April 15. The contest turned into a pitchers' duel, as his nemesis Griffin Jax allowed only one run in eight innings of work. Myers struck out six against four hits -- all singles -- and one walk.
The right-hander from nearby Henderson, did not allow a base runner to advance past second in the affair. More impressively, he had to overcome his defense committing five errors. He managed to induce a pair of double plays to erase two of those that reached safely off the miscues.
Myers' win not only stopped a three-game losing streak the team carried into the weekend series, but it kick started a three-game winning streak, as the Rebels swept the Air Force series with scores of 7-2 and 7-6 in games two and three, respectively.
