Titans Use Big Innings To Run Away From Rebels

Box Score

FULLERTON, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (16-21) had its four-game winning streak snapped by the Cal State Fullerton Titans (23-13) at Goodwin Field Saturday night. The Titans broke open a one-run affair in the sixth inning with a four-run outburst en route to their 12-4 triumph over their former Big West foe.

The Titans, clinging to a one-run lead, 4-3, midway through the sixth managed to send nine players to the plate, which resulted in four runs off of four hits. Fullerton began the frame by loading the bases against UNLV starter D.J. Myers (3-2) with a pair of singles and a walk. The Rebels made the call to the bullpen and brought in Larry Quaney in relief, but the hurler did not fare any better. Quaney walked the first batter he faced and then surrendered two run-scoring singles and a sacrifice fly.

UNLV was able to shave one run off of its deficit and pull within four, 8-4, when Austin Anderson scored from first after an error by the Titans' centerfielder followed a double to center field by Andrew Yazdanbkahsh.

The Titans tacked on four insurance scores -- two two-run doubles -- in the eighth, all of which were charged to Rebel reliever Chase Maddux.

"The game was more competitive than the score indicated," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We had two bad innings from a pitching standpoint, which those are never easy to overcome. D.J. just struggled with his secondary stuff and it was pretty much a one-pitch guy versus a very sound team, but he battled into the sixth for us. We had some good at-bats, but struck out way too many times for us to have a chance. For us to score four runs on a Friday night against Fullerton, it has to be enough to be in the game because that doesn't happen that often. We have to pitch better."

The teams alternated scoring two runs in the first three innings, as Fullerton claimed the first and third stanzas, while UNLV pushed its first two across in the second.

The Titans opened their first at-bat with four consecutive singles with the third and fourth credited with one RBI apiece.

Justin Jones evened the score at 2-all early in the second with a two-run home run to right field off CSF starter Connor Seabold (5-2). Yazdanbakhsh scored on the round-tripper after he reached via a hit-by-pitch.

Fullerton took the lead for good in the third with runs coming off a single and a groundout.

The Rebels were able to score once in the fourth to pull within one run at 4-3. Cooper Esmay led off the inning with a double and after the next to batters were retired he scored off an RBI single by Kyle Isbel.

The Scarlet & Gray was paced by a 3-for-3 evening by Yazdanbakhsh, who also scored once. Esmay also recorded a multiple-hit outing with a pair of base knocks. Jones led the team in RBI with two, while four different Rebels scored in the affair.

The Titans' Tanner Pinkston went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, while his teammate Jerrod Bravo had three hits, one RBI and one run. Coby Kauhaahaa had a game-high four RBI and three others knocked in two apiece.

Seabold picked up his fifth win of the season in six innings of work. He struck out 11 against three runs, eight hits and one walk. Miles Chambers, who tossed two relief innings and gave up one unearned run off of two hits, relieved Seabold. Maxwell Gibbs threw a scoreless ninth for CSF, but surrendered two hits.

Myers was saddled with his second loss of the year after throwing five-plus. He was touched for seven runs off of 11 hits. He fanned five, but walked three.

In all, the Rebels called upon four pitchers from the bullpen. The quartet allowed five runs off of six hits in three innings.

UNLV and Fullerton resume their series Saturday at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm with the Rebels sending Kenny Oakley (4-3, 3.29 ERA) against the Titans' John Gavin (1-2, 2.45 ERA).
