FULLERTON, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (17-22) made quick work of its third and final game against the Cal State Fullerton Titans (24-14) at Goodwin Field. The Rebels scored once in both the third and fourth innings, and those tallies were the only offense necessary as Dean Kremer and Ben Wright combined to shutout the Titans, 2-0, Sunday afternoon.
Not only did UNLV's victory stop its own two-game skid, but it also snapped the Titans' six-game winning streak. Additionally, CSF's string of six straight wins in the head-to-head series was halted.
"That was a great bounce-back win for us after a poor performance last night," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We challenged them after the game and they responded. It sure helps when you pitch like we did today. Kremer was lights out and never flinched for eight innings and Wright gave us a quick ninth. Beating Fullerton any time isn't easy."
After two scoreless frames of action, UNLV broke through in the third and put its first run on the scoreboard off an RBI single by Payton Squier. The Rebels were able to get two on base prior to Squier's hit with a one-out walk to Max Smith and a single by Kyle Isbel.
One inning later, the Scarlet & Gray upped its lead to 2-0 with help from an error and two hits. Justin Jones led off and reached safely when the Titans' first baseman misplayed a ball thrown to him. Jones made his way around the bases off singles by A.J. VanMeetren and Nick Ames â€" the latter produced the RBI.
Kremer (2-4) earned the win after he threw eight scoreless innings. He struck out four against five hits and three walks. He forced the Titans to strand seven on the base paths, four of which were in scoring position and only one of those managed to reach third base.
Wright entered in the ninth and recorded three quick outs to end the affair to notch his ninth save of the season.
CSF's Blake Quinn (4-3) was tagged with the loss after throwing four frames. Quinn was touched for two runs (one earned) off of five hits and two walks. He struck out two, but later gave way to Colton Eastman, who pitched 5.0 innings of relief. Eastman struck out 10 against two walks and one hit.
UNLV stranded eight in the contest with four of those at third and two more at second base.
The Rebels close out their four-game weekend stint in Southern California at 2:00 pm Monday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark against the UC Irvine Anteaters.
he team will head north to the Bay Area for a three-game Mountain West series against the San Jose State Spartans (April 29-May 1).
